Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesC+
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Steelers a B-. There is a lot to like until you notice edge rusher is still a hole. The Steelers never got to the one that mattered most.
That is a quarterback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The Kearney pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Makai Lemon
In pick No. 20 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value.
Pick52
Rnd2
Darrell Jackson Jr.
Darrell Jackson Jr. in Round 2, Pick 20 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick78
Rnd3
Cayden Green
No edge and no loss on Cayden Green in No. 78; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick84
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley slid further than he should have, and the 84th overall pick is lovely value for the safety. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick120
Rnd4
Carson Beck
Nice patience on Carson Beck, who had no business lasting to pick 120. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick123
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds is a better player than the Round 4 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick135
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
They did well to land Michael Trigg in the 135th pick, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick159
Rnd5
Jaden Greathouse
Fair-plus on Jaden Greathouse, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick214
Rnd6
Raylen Wilson
Raylen Wilson at No. 214 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick215
Rnd6
Roderick Kearney
Roderick Kearney at the Round 6 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick221
Rnd7
Malik Hartford
Malik Hartford at Round 7, Pick 5 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick224
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at the 224th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick236
Rnd7
Brandon Inniss
Brandon Inniss at the 236th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
