Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB-
Johnson should have been long gone. The Chiefs pounced, and earned a D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Chiefs did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The Dixon reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The Johnson steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 T.J. Parker
In the 9th pick they get a problem off the edge, even if it was a touch early.
Pick19 Rnd1 Jordyn Tyson
In pick No. 19 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick40 Rnd2 Sonny Styles
A tidy little value on Sonny Styles in Round 2, Pick 8, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
Pick42 Rnd2 Brandon Cisse
Brandon Cisse in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick71 Rnd3 Eli Stowers
Eli Stowers in No. 71 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick74 Rnd3 Zakee Wheatley
They paid sticker price for Zakee Wheatley in pick 74, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick103 Rnd4 Deion Burks
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Deion Burks. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick109 Rnd4 Emmett Johnson
Circle this one: Emmett Johnson at the 109th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick147 Rnd5 Max Iheanachor
No drama and no debate, Max Iheanachor went about where he belonged in the 147th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick177 Rnd5 Thaddeus Dixon
A reach for Thaddeus Dixon in pick 177; a little patience would have been rewarded. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
