Draft Grade — Commanders

TradesF
FutureA+
The Commanders bet the future on Mendoza. The board says D+. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Commanders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Too much went sideways, and the D+ is the honest tally.
They will need O'Neill to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Whatever Fernando Mendoza becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer.
However the rest shakes out, Lawson at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In pick No. 1 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Pick7
Rnd1
Jeremiyah Love
In the Round 1 slot they get a bell-cow for the offense at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick24
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a potential shutdown corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick25
Rnd1
Denzel Boston
Fair-plus on Denzel Boston, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick36
Rnd2
CJ Allen
A clean, defensible pick in the 36th overall pick with a little surplus value in CJ Allen. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick67
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
A slide stopped in slot 67, with A.J. Haulcy worth more than the price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick70
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
Deontae Lawson in the 70th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick71
Rnd3
Max Klare
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Max Klare in pick 71, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick102
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
They paid a round early for Trinidad Chambliss in pick 102, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick117
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds is a better player than the 117th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick134
Rnd4
Ar'maj Reed-Adams
Good price on Ar'maj Reed-Adams in slot 134, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick145
Rnd5
Kevin Coleman Jr.
They took Kevin Coleman Jr. at par in pick No. 145, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick171
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing DJ Campbell in Round 5, Pick 33. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick174
Rnd5
Isaiah Jatta
Isaiah Jatta at the 174th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick180
Rnd6
Eric O'Neill
A wild overpay on Eric O'Neill in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick183
Rnd6
Bud Clark
A reasonable price with a little left over, Bud Clark in No. 183. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick185
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
They jumped the gun on Trey Zuhn III, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick196
Rnd6
Barion Brown
Barion Brown at the 196th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick219
Rnd7
Keyron Crawford
A premium they did not need to pay, Keyron Crawford a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick223
Rnd7
J. Michael Sturdivant
A tidy little value on J. Michael Sturdivant in No. 223, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick241
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
Jordan Hall at pick 241 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
