The Shelby reach set the tone, and the Bears never recovered: F. The Braylan Shelby pick is the one that will follow the Bears into the fall. They took him 96 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. About as rough as the board gets, and a F to prove it.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. The Arnold pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick Analysis
Pick34
Rnd2
Joshua Josephs
Joshua Josephs in pick No. 34 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick56
Rnd2
Gabe Jacas
This one needs a full-page explanation: Gabe Jacas in the Round 2 slot, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick62
Rnd2
Xavier Chaplin
Xavier Chaplin at Round 2, Pick 30 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick65
Rnd3
Will Lee III
They went early on Will Lee III in the 65th pick, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick87
Rnd3
Deion Burks
A wild overpay on Deion Burks in pick 87, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick94
Rnd3
Chase Bisontis
A big swing on Chase Bisontis at No. 94, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick103
Rnd4
Parker Brailsford
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Parker Brailsford. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick124
Rnd4
Braylan Shelby
Braylan Shelby in Round 4, Pick 24 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick130
Rnd4
Vincent Anthony Jr.
They reached a country mile for Vincent Anthony Jr. at the 130th overall pick, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick131
Rnd4
Charles Jagusah
Fair-plus on Charles Jagusah, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Pick142
Rnd5
Max Iheanachor
A real head-scratcher, Max Iheanachor in slot 142 is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick148
Rnd5
Tim Keenan III
Tim Keenan III at pick No. 148 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick163
Rnd5
Zane Durant
Zane Durant in pick 163 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick170
Rnd5
Trey Moore
They talked themselves into Trey Moore at No. 170, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick181
Rnd6
Kalil Alexander
They reached into another round for Kalil Alexander, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick192
Rnd6
Aamil Wagner
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Aamil Wagner at No. 192 is the proof. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick199
Rnd6
Monroe Mills
The board had Monroe Mills higher than the 199th pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick207
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at the 207th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick210
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster at pick 210 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick236
Rnd7
Jalen Thompson
Value said wait; Jalen Thompson in slot 236 says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick238
Rnd7
Roderick Kearney
No drama and no debate, Roderick Kearney went about where he belonged in pick No. 238. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick240
Rnd7
Jackson Arnold
They will replay Jackson Arnold at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick245
Rnd7
Brandon Inniss
Brandon Inniss at pick 245 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
