FutureB-
The Jets won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B+. The Jets spent real capital to be 55 picks early on Da'Shawn Womack, and the board is going to hold them to it. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Stockton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The Puka Nacua pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In No. 11 they get a centerfielder for the defense, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick18
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the 18th overall pick they get the heartbeat of the defense at fair value. More want than need.
Pick28
Rnd1
Christen Miller
Christen Miller at pick No. 28 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick35
Rnd2
Colton Hood
They paid sticker price for Colton Hood in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick45
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
They took Olaivavega Ioane at par in the 45th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick90
Rnd3
Malachi Fields
Malachi Fields slipping to pick 90 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick105
Rnd4
Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton in the 105th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick178
Rnd5
Gunner Stockton
Gunner Stockton in pick No. 178 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick179
Rnd5
Drayk Bowen
Drayk Bowen at Round 5, Pick 40 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick196
Rnd6
Amare Campbell
This one needs a full-page explanation: Amare Campbell in the 196th overall pick, miles early. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick205
Rnd6
DJ Harvey
Good price on DJ Harvey in No. 205, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick212
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at slot 212 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick220
Rnd7
Nolan Rucci
Nolan Rucci at the Round 7 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick228
Rnd7
Da'Shawn Womack
They talked themselves into Da'Shawn Womack at pick 228, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick240
Rnd7
Brandon Inniss
Brandon Inniss in pick No. 240 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Pick255
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
By-the-book stuff, Riley Mahlman at Round 7, Pick 39 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick257
Rnd7
TJ Metcalf
A straight-up fair deal on TJ Metcalf at No. 257, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
