Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
C+
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesD+
FutureC
Williams should have been long gone. The Saints pounced, and earned a C+. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Kyle Williams got past him. The Saints do not have to explain a thing at the Round 7 slot. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
The Oliver pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. Adding Travis Jones by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
If Will Johnson and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In pick 9 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick27
Rnd1
Tyler Booker
In slot 27 they get a cornerstone up front, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59
Rnd2
Josaiah Stewart
Nothing to complain about; Josaiah Stewart went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick71
Rnd3
Jared Ivey
Jared Ivey in the 71st overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick112
Rnd4
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba in Round 4, Pick 10 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick131
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
Steal is underselling it; Cam Skattebo at the Round 4 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick157
Rnd5
Jonas Sanker
Jonas Sanker at No. 157 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick184
Rnd6
CJ West
No drama and no debate, CJ West went about where he belonged in the 184th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick235
Rnd7
Kyle Williams
The board fumbled Kyle Williams all the way to the 235th overall pick, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick243
Rnd7
Luke Lachey
You do not let a tight end like Luke Lachey reach pick No. 243 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick248
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan at Round 7, Pick 32 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick254
Rnd7
Collin Oliver
They left a pile of value on the table to take Collin Oliver this early at slot 254. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
