FutureA+
The Colts kept it disciplined and banked a B. The rest of the league had time to spare on Dayon Hayes; the Colts did not wait, grabbing him 154 spots ahead at slot 129.
That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. With wide receiver and quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
The Colts clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick49
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Somehow Tyler Warren was still sitting there in the 49th pick, and they pounced on premier tight end value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick52
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
They barely believed it either: Malaki Starks still on the board at No. 52. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick62
Rnd2
Maxwell Hairston
They paid up for Maxwell Hairston at pick 62 when waiting would have done the job. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick65
Rnd3
Deone Walker
No drama and no debate, Deone Walker went about where he belonged in the 65th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick72
Rnd3
Jihaad Campbell
Taking Jihaad Campbell in pick No. 72 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick73
Rnd3
Ajani Cornelius
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ajani Cornelius in the Round 3 slot, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick84
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
A want over a need in pick 84: Xavier Watts adds a safety while wide receiver and quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick94
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
They took Dylan Fairchild at par in the 94th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick96
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
They will replay Demetrius Knight Jr. at pick No. 96 for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick102
Rnd4
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson in the Round 4 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick105
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. at slot 105 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick111
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
They reached a country mile for Darius Alexander at the 111th pick, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick112
Rnd4
Andrew Mukuba
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 112 on Andrew Mukuba with wide receiver and quarterback unsolved.
Pick114
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
A tight end of that caliber at Round 4, Pick 13 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick123
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Jake Majors in the 123rd pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It fills a real need, too.
Pick129
Rnd4
Dayon Hayes
Dayon Hayes in pick No. 129 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick141
Rnd5
Quincy Riley
Quincy Riley at No. 141 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick150
Rnd5
Cobee Bryant
They left a pile of value on the table to take Cobee Bryant this early at pick 150. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick151
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues in slot 151 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick169
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. in Round 5, Pick 32 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick170
Rnd5
Connor Colby
The board had cheaper options than Connor Colby at the 170th overall pick, and it noticed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick181
Rnd6
Xavier Truss
They talked themselves into Xavier Truss at the Round 6 slot, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick189
Rnd6
Brashard Smith
Circle this one: Brashard Smith at slot 189 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick192
Rnd6
Jaylen Reed
A clean, defensible pick in the 192nd pick with a little surplus value in Jaylen Reed. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick240
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Steal is underselling it; Jamon Dumas-Johnson at pick 240 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
