Draft Grade — Colts
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesC+
FutureA
The Colts kept it disciplined and banked a B. The Colts treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick 177 on Xavier Truss a full 104 spots early.
That Smith pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. The Porter pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots still on the board.
The Trey Hendrickson pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick47
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Taking Tyler Warren in No. 47 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick51
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks at slot 51 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick62
Rnd2
Maxwell Hairston
The board had cheaper options than Maxwell Hairston at Round 2, Pick 30, and it noticed. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick65
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker at the 65th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Pick68
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick69
Rnd3
Darien Porter
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 69th pick on Darien Porter with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Pick81
Rnd3
Ajani Cornelius
A real head-scratcher, Ajani Cornelius in the 81st pick is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick87
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Andrew Mukuba while clear needs at wide receiver, quarterback and other spots sat open.
Pick97
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
Demetrius Knight Jr. in the Round 3 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick104
Rnd4
TreVeyon Henderson
The board fumbled TreVeyon Henderson all the way to the 104th overall pick, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick105
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander at pick 105 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick126
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
Steal is underselling it; Mason Taylor at Round 4, Pick 25 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick128
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Jake Majors at No. 128 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick129
Rnd4
Quincy Riley
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Quincy Riley at cornerback with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots open.
Pick145
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at Round 5, Pick 8 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick150
Rnd5
Cobee Bryant
Value said wait; Cobee Bryant in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick176
Rnd6
Smael Mondon Jr.
They barely believed it either: Smael Mondon Jr. still on the board at the 176th pick. It fills a real need, too.
Pick177
Rnd6
Xavier Truss
Xavier Truss in slot 177 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick186
Rnd6
Jeffrey Bassa
They robbed the room for Jeffrey Bassa here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick192
Rnd6
Brashard Smith
Somehow Brashard Smith was still sitting there in pick 192, and they pounced on premier running back value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jaylen Reed
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jaylen Reed at the 204th overall pick. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick225
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Jamon Dumas-Johnson is a better player than No. 225 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
