Draft Grade — Colts

FutureA+
More right than wrong for the Colts, and a B- to prove it. Nobody had Seth McLaughlin this high, and it is not close. The Colts reached 50 spots to get him at the 191st overall pick.
The Tuten pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback and edge rusher open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick45
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell at Round 2, Pick 13 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick54
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Nice patience on Xavier Watts, who had no business lasting to No. 54. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick55
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
By-the-book stuff, Alfred Collins at the 55th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick58
Rnd2
Azareye'h Thomas
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Azareye'h Thomas. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick65
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson is a better player than pick 65 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick75
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
A straight-up fair deal on Donovan Jackson at slot 75, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick82
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at pick 82 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick94
Rnd3
Kevin Winston Jr.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Kevin Winston Jr. in the Round 3 slot leaves quarterback and edge rusher for later.
Pick104
Rnd4
Savion Williams
Savion Williams at Round 4, Pick 3 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick105
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
They paid sticker price for Smael Mondon Jr. in the 105th pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick110
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jared Wilson in the 110th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick112
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
The board had cheaper options than Emery Jones Jr. at slot 112, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick114
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander at pick No. 114 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick129
Rnd4
Dorian Strong
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Dorian Strong adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback and edge rusher untouched.
Pick141
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at Round 5, Pick 2 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick150
Rnd5
Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius at the 150th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
Pick173
Rnd5
DJ Giddens
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing DJ Giddens in No. 173. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick183
Rnd6
Bhayshul Tuten
Circle this one: Bhayshul Tuten at pick No. 183 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick191
Rnd6
Seth McLaughlin
A real head-scratcher, Seth McLaughlin in the Round 6 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick196
Rnd6
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
They reached a country mile for Jamon Dumas-Johnson at slot 196, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick211
Rnd6
Cam Jackson
They liked Cam Jackson enough to skip the value, taking him in the 211th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick216
Rnd6
Cody Lindenberg
Cody Lindenberg at pick 216 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Pick222
Rnd7
Jonas Sanker
Value with a capital V on Jonas Sanker in the 222nd overall pick, a genuine coup. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick234
Rnd7
Moliki Matavao
They left a pile of value on the table to take Moliki Matavao this early at slot 234. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick257
Rnd7
Jalen Travis
Jalen Travis at the 257th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
