Nobody dealt better than the Commanders this weekend: A-. The Commanders went off the board in a big way for Mikail Kamara, 34 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
On value alone, Smith makes the weekend a net positive. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They will answer for taking linebacker early while quarterback, running back and other spots went begging.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
Bottom line, with Arvell Reese leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the Round 1 slot they get a three-down second-level presence at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Pick55
Rnd2
CJ Allen
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, running back and other spots to take CJ Allen, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Pick77
Rnd3
Mikail Kamara
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Mikail Kamara. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick116
Rnd4
Genesis Smith
You do not let a safety like Genesis Smith reach the 116th pick and blink. They did not. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick123
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis at pick No. 123 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick146
Rnd5
Tanner Koziol
Tanner Koziol at pick 146 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick186
Rnd6
Eric McAlister
They let Eric McAlister come to them and pounced at pick 186. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick197
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III in No. 197 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick223
Rnd7
Roderick Kearney
A wild overpay on Roderick Kearney in slot 223, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
