FutureA+
Nobody dealt better than the Commanders this weekend: B+. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Commanders reached some 105 spots for Keaten Wade, and value like that does not grow back. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Commanders indulged a want in Lawson while a need in wide receiver and tight end stayed open. The Lawson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
A reach for Anthony Hill Jr. in the Round 1 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick74
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Deontae Lawson adds a linebacker and leaves wide receiver and tight end untouched.
Pick80
Rnd3
Malik Muhammad
They did well to land Malik Muhammad in slot 80, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick109
Rnd4
Nicholas Singleton
Nice patience on Nicholas Singleton, who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 9. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick116
Rnd4
Drew Allar
They talked themselves into Drew Allar at pick No. 116, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick145
Rnd5
Trey Moore
Trey Moore at No. 145 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick173
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
A wild overpay on Patrick Payton in Round 5, Pick 35, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick185
Rnd6
Keaten Wade
They reached into another round for Keaten Wade, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick196
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
A conviction pick on Trey Zuhn III at the 196th pick that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick223
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Hall in pick 223 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick252
Rnd7
Tony Grimes
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tony Grimes in pick No. 252. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
