Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Chargers. The tape said wait; the Chargers did not. Theo Wease Jr. went at Round 6, Pick 38, a good 39 picks before the board was ready. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Woodson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
The Chargers indulged a want in Paul Jr. while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open. Job largely done: interior defensive lineman settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In the 22nd overall pick they get a wrecking ball inside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick62
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
They will replay Jihaad Campbell at the 62nd pick for years; that is how good the value is. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick86
Rnd3
Chris Paul Jr.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Chris Paul Jr. in slot 86 leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
Pick125
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
They jumped the gun on Malachi Moore, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick166
Rnd5
CJ West
CJ West at Round 5, Pick 28 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick181
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
A reach for Oronde Gadsden II in No. 181; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick199
Rnd6
Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins in the Round 6 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jermari Harris
They talked themselves into Jermari Harris at No. 209, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick214
Rnd6
Theo Wease Jr.
A real head-scratcher, Theo Wease Jr. in Round 6, Pick 38 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick241
Rnd7
LaJohntay Wester
A reach on LaJohntay Wester in pick No. 241; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick254
Rnd7
Marcus Yarns
They went early on Marcus Yarns in the 254th overall pick, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
Pick256
Rnd7
Craig Woodson
They robbed the room for Craig Woodson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
