A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Cardinals get a C-. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cardinals took Jaylen Reed at pick 115, roughly 76 spots before his name belonged.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They banked enough surplus on Nelson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
In the 16th pick they get a home-run threat at receiver, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick47
Rnd2
Trey Amos
They paid sticker price for Trey Amos in slot 47, and that is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick55
Rnd2
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at the Round 2 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick78
Rnd3
Barrett Carter
Barrett Carter in pick 78 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick97
Rnd3
Jake Majors
Jake Majors at Round 3, Pick 33 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick115
Rnd4
Jaylen Reed
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaylen Reed well ahead of where he belonged. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick156
Rnd5
Pat Bryant
Pat Bryant in the 156th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick190
Rnd6
Jack Nelson
A tidy bit of business in the Round 6 slot, where Jack Nelson graded well above the range. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick209
Rnd6
Nazir Stackhouse
They took Nazir Stackhouse at par in the 209th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick229
Rnd7
Cam Jackson
They jumped the gun on Cam Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
Pick241
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa in Round 7, Pick 25 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick256
Rnd7
Cody Lindenberg
Cody Lindenberg at slot 256 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
