The Cardinals worked the phones like thieves and earned a B-. Nobody else had Willie Lampkin anywhere near pick No. 139. The Cardinals did, by 42 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Mukuba steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The veteran additions, Danielle Hunter chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In the 31st pick they get a wrecking ball inside, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Maxwell Hairston
A big swing on Maxwell Hairston at Round 2, Pick 11, well ahead of any board in the building. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick50
Rnd2
Nic Scourton
Nic Scourton at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick52
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
The board had Jihaad Campbell higher than pick 52, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick64
Rnd2
Charles Grant
Charles Grant at No. 64 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick74
Rnd3
Jaylin Noel
A slide stopped in pick No. 74, with Jaylin Noel worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick78
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
They took Ozzy Trapilo at par in slot 78, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick85
Rnd3
Miles Frazier
They talked themselves into Miles Frazier at No. 85, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick89
Rnd3
Elijah Arroyo
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Elijah Arroyo in pick No. 89. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick91
Rnd3
Savion Williams
Savion Williams in Round 3, Pick 27 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick95
Rnd3
Tai Felton
Tai Felton at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick96
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo slid further than he should have, and the 96th pick is lovely value for the running back. The roster fit checks out.
Pick102
Rnd3
Shemar Turner
Shemar Turner at pick 102 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick108
Rnd4
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba in the 108th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick114
Rnd4
Quinn Ewers
Circle this one: Quinn Ewers at pick 114 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick115
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
No edge and no loss on Denzel Burke in No. 115; it is a wash and a sensible one. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick127
Rnd4
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland at Round 4, Pick 25 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick133
Rnd4
Hollin Pierce
A premium they did not need to pay, Hollin Pierce a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick139
Rnd5
Willie Lampkin
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Willie Lampkin. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick140
Rnd5
Ty Robinson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ty Robinson this early at pick No. 140. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
