Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall
B
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB-
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Cardinals a B. Nobody had Hayden Conner this high, and it is not close. The Cardinals reached 112 spots to get him at the 158th pick. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They banked enough surplus on Horton to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Spending an early pick on cornerback with quarterback and tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In slot 22 they get an anchor for the defensive front. A real need, handled.
Pick39
Rnd2
Will Johnson
Circle this one: Will Johnson at No. 39 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick47
Rnd2
Jordan Burch
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jordan Burch in pick 47, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick78
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
A reach for Cam Skattebo in the 78th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Pick85
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
They let Carson Schwesinger come to them and pounced at pick No. 85. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick86
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
You do not let an offensive lineman like Donovan Jackson reach the 86th pick and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick115
Rnd4
Cody Simon
Cody Simon at the 115th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick119
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 4 slot on Denzel Burke with quarterback and tight end unsolved.
Pick134
Rnd4
Tory Horton
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Tory Horton in No. 134, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick152
Rnd5
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland in the 152nd overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick153
Rnd5
Elijah Roberts
Elijah Roberts at Round 5, Pick 15 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick158
Rnd5
Hayden Conner
A big swing on Hayden Conner at slot 158, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick161
Rnd5
Ty Robinson
Ty Robinson at pick No. 161 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick166
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore at pick 166 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor itch, scratched.
