FutureB-
The Cardinals worked the phones like thieves and earned a B. Nobody else had Shaun Dolac anywhere near slot 106. The Cardinals did, by 232 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
The Hairston pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In No. 27 they get an anchor for the defensive front. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick29
Rnd1
Jalon Walker
In pick 29 they get a green-dot type in the middle at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick30
Rnd1
Mike Green
In the 30th overall pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick33
Rnd2
Grey Zabel
They paid sticker price for Grey Zabel in pick No. 33, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
No edge and no loss on Tyler Booker in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick38
Rnd2
Luther Burden III
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Luther Burden III at the 38th pick is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick45
Rnd2
Jack Sawyer
Jack Sawyer at No. 45 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick46
Rnd2
Darien Porter
They reached into another round for Darien Porter, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick65
Rnd3
Marcus Mbow
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Marcus Mbow at pick 65. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick66
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
Value said wait; Cam Skattebo in slot 66 says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick67
Rnd3
Donovan Ezeiruaku
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Donovan Ezeiruaku in Round 3, Pick 3. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick80
Rnd3
Jaylin Noel
You do not let a wide receiver like Jaylin Noel reach the 80th pick and blink. They did not. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick89
Rnd3
Jamaree Caldwell
A wild overpay on Jamaree Caldwell in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick96
Rnd3
Will Howard
By-the-book stuff, Will Howard at the 96th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick98
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston at Round 3, Pick 34 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick103
Rnd4
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland at pick No. 103 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick104
Rnd4
Ty Robinson
Ty Robinson in pick 104 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick105
Rnd4
Willie Lampkin
This one needs a full-page explanation: Willie Lampkin in slot 105, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick106
Rnd4
Shaun Dolac
They talked themselves into Shaun Dolac at the 106th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
Pick107
Rnd4
Elijah Arroyo
Elijah Arroyo in No. 107 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
