FutureA
Good, not great, for the Buccaneers: B+. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Buccaneers took Eric Gentry a full 62 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
That Mateer pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Dane Jackson gives the group a proven body among the projects. Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Jermod McCoy
In pick 22 they get an island corner. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick86
Rnd3
Whit Weeks
Whit Weeks slid further than he should have, and the 86th overall pick is lovely value for the linebacker. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick122
Rnd4
Patrick Payton
A big swing on Patrick Payton at Round 4, Pick 20, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick161
Rnd5
John Mateer
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, John Mateer in the Round 5 slot, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick200
Rnd6
J.C. Davis
Value said wait; J.C. Davis in No. 200 says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick235
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
They talked themselves into Eric Gentry at pick No. 235, and the board did not agree. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
