FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Buccaneers: B-. There is reaching, and then there is Jamari Lyons at the Round 7 slot. The Buccaneers jumped the board by 83 and dared it to prove them wrong. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
They will answer for taking linebacker early while quarterback and running back went begging. Taaffe falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Buccaneers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the 31st overall pick they get a three-down second-level presence at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Pick41
Rnd2
Quincy Rhodes Jr.
They jumped the gun on Quincy Rhodes Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick42
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Sonny Styles while clear needs at quarterback and running back sat open.
Pick59
Rnd2
Nyck Harbor
By-the-book stuff, Nyck Harbor at pick 59 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick64
Rnd2
Joe Royer
They talked themselves into Joe Royer at Round 2, Pick 32, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick74
Rnd3
Cayden Green
They paid up for Cayden Green at slot 74 when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick89
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
Steal is underselling it; Michael Taaffe at slot 89 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick108
Rnd4
Derrick Moore
Derrick Moore at No. 108 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick125
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick132
Rnd4
David Oke
They reached into another round for David Oke, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick136
Rnd4
Zane Durant
A real head-scratcher, Zane Durant in the 136th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick165
Rnd5
Oscar Delp
A big swing on Oscar Delp at Round 5, Pick 25, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick166
Rnd5
Dane Key
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dane Key this early at pick No. 166. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick172
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Nwankpa. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick173
Rnd5
Barion Brown
Barion Brown in pick No. 173 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick175
Rnd5
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
They took Jermaine Mathews Jr. at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick185
Rnd6
Rasheem Biles
The board had cheaper options than Rasheem Biles at the 185th overall pick, and it noticed. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick190
Rnd6
Isaiah Nwokobia
A premium they did not need to pay, Isaiah Nwokobia a notch or two before his time. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick208
Rnd6
Daevin Hobbs
Daevin Hobbs at pick 208 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick217
Rnd7
Princewill Umanmielen
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Princewill Umanmielen. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick223
Rnd7
PJ Williams
PJ Williams at slot 223 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick241
Rnd7
Jamari Lyons
Value said wait; Jamari Lyons in the 241st pick says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
