FutureB
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Buccaneers. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Buccaneers spent Round 7, Pick 13 on Eric Gentry, a name most had 102 spots down the list. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
However the rest shakes out, Iamaleava at that price is a win they earned. The Buccaneers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. Interior defensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
LT Overton
In slot 28 they get a bendy edge with upside. A real need, handled.
Pick44
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
No drama and no debate, Sonny Styles went about where he belonged in pick No. 44. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick52
Rnd2
Arvell Reese
Arvell Reese in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick66
Rnd3
Caleb Tiernan
A real head-scratcher, Caleb Tiernan in the 66th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick73
Rnd3
Ja'Kobi Lane
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick 73 is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick95
Rnd3
Rod Moore
Circle this one: Rod Moore at No. 95 is a fall that decides a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick104
Rnd4
Joe Royer
They paid a round early for Joe Royer in slot 104, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick108
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Davison Igbinosun well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick110
Rnd4
Zane Durant
They reached a country mile for Zane Durant at the Round 4 slot, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick114
Rnd4
Sammy Omosigho
Sammy Omosigho at the 114th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick117
Rnd4
Nico Iamaleava
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Nico Iamaleava in pick No. 117, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick131
Rnd4
Kyle Louis
Kyle Louis in the 131st overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick136
Rnd4
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr. at No. 136 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick150
Rnd5
Kage Casey
Kage Casey in Round 5, Pick 11 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick152
Rnd5
Barion Brown
They reached into another round for Barion Brown, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick155
Rnd5
Rasheem Biles
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Rasheem Biles. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick159
Rnd5
Dane Key
Value said wait; Dane Key in pick No. 159 says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick166
Rnd5
Josh Moten
They left a pile of value on the table to take Josh Moten this early at slot 166. It fills a real need, too.
Pick167
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Nwankpa at No. 167 squarely in line with his ranking. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick177
Rnd5
Rayshaun Benny
Rayshaun Benny at the 177th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick182
Rnd5
Raylen Wilson
Raylen Wilson at the Round 5 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick211
Rnd6
Bear Alexander
Bear Alexander in the 211th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick216
Rnd6
Princewill Umanmielen
Princewill Umanmielen at pick No. 216 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick220
Rnd7
PJ Williams
A wild overpay on PJ Williams in Round 7, Pick 2, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick221
Rnd7
Jamari Lyons
A big swing on Jamari Lyons at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick231
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
They talked themselves into Eric Gentry at the 231st overall pick, and the board did not agree. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick245
Rnd7
Kaleb Jackson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kaleb Jackson in pick 245, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
