Draft Grade — Seahawks
Overall

NeedA-
TradesF
FutureD-
A weekend the Seahawks spent ahead of the board, for worse: F. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick No. 137 is 48 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
Abdul Carter at the Round 1 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick10
Rnd1
Grey Zabel
In pick 10 they get an anchor for the offensive line, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick31
Rnd1
Omarion Hampton
In slot 31 they get a workhorse for the backfield. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Matthew Golden
Matthew Golden at Round 2, Pick 7 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick63
Rnd2
Jayden Higgins
Good price on Jayden Higgins in the 63rd pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick66
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
No edge and no loss on Carson Schwesinger in the 66th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick95
Rnd3
Will Howard
A conviction pick on Will Howard at the Round 3 slot that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick133
Rnd4
Pat Bryant
They reached into another round for Pat Bryant, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick137
Rnd4
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Value said wait; Dont'e Thornton Jr. in No. 137 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick172
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at the 172nd pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick175
Rnd5
CJ West
They paid up for CJ West at Round 5, Pick 37 when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
Pick223
Rnd7
Tonka Hemingway
A big swing on Tonka Hemingway at slot 223, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick226
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
The board had cheaper options than Isaac TeSlaa at pick No. 226, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick234
Rnd7
Jackson Hawes
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jackson Hawes this early at pick 234. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick251
Rnd7
Mac McWilliams
Mac McWilliams in slot 251 is fair value, right on his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick257
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
Circle this one: Phil Mafah at the 257th pick is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
