Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureF
The Cowboys lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story. The Cowboys lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.
The cost of the Wilson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers. Getting Green where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
The Cowboys clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In No. 12 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33
Rnd2
Colton Hood
Colton Hood at the 33rd pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick67
Rnd3
Josiah Trotter
Fair-plus on Josiah Trotter, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick102
Rnd4
Jaeden Roberts
They paid up for Jaeden Roberts at Round 4, Pick 2 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick103
Rnd4
Caden Curry
Caden Curry in pick No. 103 is fair value, right on his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
By-the-book stuff, Jalon Kilgore at the 112th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick117
Rnd4
Zachariah Branch
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Zachariah Branch at slot 117 is the proof. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick134
Rnd4
J'Mari Taylor
They paid a round early for J'Mari Taylor in pick 134, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
Pick150
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
No drama and no debate, Davison Igbinosun went about where he belonged in pick No. 150. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick174
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
They read the board right and Xavier Nwankpa was the payoff at No. 174. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick175
Rnd5
Rayshaun Benny
They paid sticker price for Rayshaun Benny in the Round 5 slot, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick177
Rnd5
Raylen Wilson
A premium they did not need to pay, Raylen Wilson a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick178
Rnd5
Bud Clark
No edge and no loss on Bud Clark in Round 5, Pick 40; it is a wash and a sensible one. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick180
Rnd6
Taylen Green
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Taylen Green in the 180th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick183
Rnd6
Josh Moten
A straight-up fair deal on Josh Moten at the 183rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick192
Rnd6
Trebor Pena
Trebor Pena at slot 192 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick206
Rnd6
Robert Spears-Jennings
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Robert Spears-Jennings. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick209
Rnd6
Peyton Bowen
They took Peyton Bowen at par in pick 209, which is nothing to complain about. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jerry Wilson
Jerry Wilson at the 215th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick218
Rnd7
Barion Brown
A quiet steal in the 218th overall pick: Barion Brown for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick219
Rnd7
Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona in slot 219 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick221
Rnd7
Brett Norfleet
Brett Norfleet in the Round 7 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick225
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
Riley Mahlman in Round 7, Pick 9 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
