Draft Grade — Chargers

Flashes of a plan, unevenly run, for the Chargers: C+.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Chargers did exactly that with Stone Handy in Round 7, Pick 40.

They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. Lambert-Smith falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

So much rides on JT Tuimoloau that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 JT Tuimoloau
In Round 1, Pick 22 they get a problem off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick55 Rnd2 Jordan Burch
Jordan Burch at slot 55 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick86 Rnd3 Darius Alexander
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Darius Alexander. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick125 Rnd4 Antwaun Powell-Ryland
A wild overpay on Antwaun Powell-Ryland in No. 125, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick158 Rnd5 Que Robinson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Que Robinson in pick 158, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick181 Rnd6 Jack Kiser
They paid sticker price for Jack Kiser in the 181st overall pick, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick199 Rnd6 Clay Webb
Clay Webb at pick No. 199 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick209 Rnd6 KeAndre Lambert-Smith
KeAndre Lambert-Smith slipping to No. 209 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick214 Rnd6 Nazir Stackhouse
Good price on Nazir Stackhouse in the 214th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick256 Rnd7 Stone Handy
Stone Handy in pick 256 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
