Draft Grade — Panthers

ValueB

FutureB-
Good, not great, for the Panthers: B-. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Panthers took Gino Garcia a full 45 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
On value alone, Neal makes the weekend a net positive. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Mason Graham
In slot 8 they get a disruptive interior force at fair value.
Pick57
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Xavier Watts at the 57th pick is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick74
Rnd3
Tre Harris
Value with a capital V on Tre Harris in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick114
Rnd4
Devin Neal
The board fumbled Devin Neal all the way to No. 114, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick140
Rnd5
Jacob Parrish
They robbed the room for Jacob Parrish here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick143
Rnd5
Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. at the 143rd overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick150
Rnd5
Que Robinson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Que Robinson in the 150th pick, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick163
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
By-the-book stuff, Seth McLaughlin at slot 163 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick204
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at No. 204 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick213
Rnd6
CJ Dippre
They reached a country mile for CJ Dippre at pick 213, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick224
Rnd7
Donovan Smith
A wild overpay on Donovan Smith in Round 7, Pick 8, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick239
Rnd7
Kobe Hudson
Taking Kobe Hudson in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick247
Rnd7
Shemar James
Fair-plus on Shemar James, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick253
Rnd7
Gino Garcia
Value said wait; Gino Garcia in the 253rd overall pick says they were not listening. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
