Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall

TradesA+
FutureA
Maye is the Commanders' new face under center. Grade: A-. The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Sainristil falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They will answer for taking linebacker early while tight end and interior defensive lineman went begging.
Bortolini has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
In the end it comes back to Drake Maye, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick34
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
By-the-book stuff, Chop Robinson at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick35
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Guyton at pick 35, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick40
Rnd2
Kalen King
They took Kalen King at par in No. 40, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick63
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
Fair-plus on Edgerrin Cooper, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick67
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Payton Wilson in the 67th pick leaves tight end and interior defensive lineman for later.
Pick68
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany in the 68th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick98
Rnd3
Bucky Irving
Bucky Irving at pick No. 98 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick101
Rnd4
Mike Sainristil
Mike Sainristil at the 101st overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick103
Rnd4
Jamari Thrash
Jamari Thrash slid further than he should have, and the 103rd pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick104
Rnd4
Cade Stover
A curious use of pick 104. Tight end and interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a TE-EDGE in Cade Stover did not.
Pick138
Rnd5
Isaiah Adams
Isaiah Adams slipping to the Round 5 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick181
Rnd6
Kitan Oladapo
Kitan Oladapo is a better player than No. 181 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick209
Rnd6
Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini at slot 209 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick220
Rnd6
Tyrone Tracy Jr.
A quiet steal in Round 6, Pick 45: Tyrone Tracy Jr. for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
