The Bengals turned the phones into found money: B+. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Bengals did exactly that with Luke Lachey in the Round 5 slot.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In pick 30 they get a load in the middle, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick55
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 55, where Xavier Watts graded well above the range. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick58
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
A reasonable price with a little left over, Donovan Ezeiruaku in the Round 2 slot. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick62
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at Round 2, Pick 30 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick85
Rnd3
Miles Frazier
They reached into another round for Miles Frazier, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick89
Rnd3
Chris Paul Jr.
Chris Paul Jr. slid further than he should have, and the 89th pick is lovely value for the linebacker. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick119
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cam Skattebo at No. 119. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick153
Rnd5
Logan Brown
Good price on Logan Brown in the Round 5 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick166
Rnd5
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in pick 166 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick169
Rnd5
Kyle Williams
No drama and no debate, Kyle Williams went about where he belonged in pick No. 169. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick193
Rnd6
CJ West
Nothing to complain about; CJ West went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick204
Rnd6
Nazir Stackhouse
They paid sticker price for Nazir Stackhouse in the 204th overall pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick214
Rnd6
Alijah Huzzie
A straight-up fair deal on Alijah Huzzie at Round 6, Pick 38, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
