Muhammad should have been long gone. The Bears pounced, and earned a B. The Bears did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Malik Muhammad fell into the Round 4 slot.
That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. If Hall pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
Somehow Arvell Reese was still sitting there in slot 25, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick57
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
Taking Caleb Banks in No. 57 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick89
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe in the 89th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick129
Rnd4
Malik Muhammad
A cornerback of that caliber at Round 4, Pick 29 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick166
Rnd5
Red Murdock
No drama and no debate, Red Murdock went about where he belonged in pick No. 166. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick220
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
By-the-book stuff, Riley Mahlman at the 220th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
The board had cheaper options than Jordan Hall at the Round 7 slot, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick241
Rnd7
Jaylon Braxton
They took Jaylon Braxton at par in pick 241, which is nothing to complain about. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
