Draft Grade — Colts

FutureA+
The Colts won the night they stopped Gordon II from sliding. Grade: A-. When a board-topper like Ollie Gordon II slides to Round 7, Pick 24, you do not overthink it, and the Colts did not. Little to argue with here, and the A- says so.
The cost of the Riley reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They will answer for taking cornerback early while wide receiver, quarterback and other spots went begging.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick Analysis
Pick47
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Taking Tyler Warren in Round 2, Pick 15 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick49
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malaki Starks in pick No. 49, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick54
Rnd2
Azareye'h Thomas
A reach for Azareye'h Thomas in pick 54; a little patience would have been rewarded. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick64
Rnd2
Maxwell Hairston
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Maxwell Hairston in slot 64 leaves wide receiver, quarterback and other spots for later.
Pick69
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker in the 69th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick78
Rnd3
Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius at the 78th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick90
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Andrew Mukuba at safety with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots open.
Pick91
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
The board fumbled Demetrius Knight Jr. all the way to the Round 3 slot, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick108
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander at slot 108 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick110
Rnd4
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson at pick No. 110 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick118
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jake Majors at Round 4, Pick 17 is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick121
Rnd4
Luke Kandra
Luke Kandra at No. 121 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It fills a real need, too.
Pick128
Rnd4
Elijah Arroyo
Somehow Elijah Arroyo was still sitting there in pick 128, and they pounced on premier tight end value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick129
Rnd4
Quincy Riley
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Quincy Riley adds a cornerback and leaves wide receiver, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Pick153
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
They left a pile of value on the table to take JJ Pegues this early at the Round 5 slot. The roster fit checks out.
Pick164
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
Steal is underselling it; Smael Mondon Jr. at the 164th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick180
Rnd6
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa at the 180th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick191
Rnd6
Jaylen Reed
Jaylen Reed at the Round 6 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick222
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
A tidy bit of business in pick 222, where Jamon Dumas-Johnson graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick226
Rnd7
Luke Lachey
Circle this one: Luke Lachey at slot 226 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick240
Rnd7
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II in the 240th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick255
Rnd7
Javontez Spraggins
Javontez Spraggins at Round 7, Pick 39 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
