FutureF
The Raiders left with their quarterback, and a F to match. The phones were a trap the Raiders kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.
The whole projection now runs through Fernando Mendoza; hit there and everything else looks smarter. Crawford has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
That Coleman Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
There is no spinning it; the board won this weekend going away.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick16
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In pick 16 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Pick17
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
In the 17th pick they get an island corner at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick25
Rnd1
Caleb Banks
In slot 25 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick36
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Olaivavega Ioane. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter slipping to the 67th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick102
Rnd4
Genesis Smith
Genesis Smith is a better player than pick No. 102 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick117
Rnd4
Zachariah Branch
A slide stopped in Round 4, Pick 17, with Zachariah Branch worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick129
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
No drama and no debate, DeMonte Capehart went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 29. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick134
Rnd4
Kage Casey
They paid sticker price for Kage Casey in pick 134, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick163
Rnd5
Kevin Coleman Jr.
They barely believed it either: Kevin Coleman Jr. still on the board at the 163rd overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick174
Rnd5
Kobe Baynes
Good price on Kobe Baynes in the Round 5 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick183
Rnd6
DJ Harvey
DJ Harvey at No. 183 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick197
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at the 197th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick219
Rnd7
Keyron Crawford
They jumped the gun on Keyron Crawford, taking him earlier than his grade liked. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick226
Rnd7
Jack Velling
By-the-book stuff, Jack Velling at slot 226 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick239
Rnd7
Trey Holly
Trey Holly in the 239th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick241
Rnd7
Tony Grimes
Tony Grimes in Round 7, Pick 25 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick257
Rnd7
Jaquaize Pettaway
They took Jaquaize Pettaway at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
