Draft Grade — Saints
Overall

FutureA
The Saints won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: A-. Whoever sat across the table from the Saints should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
They will need Ransom to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They banked enough surplus on Sampson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In pick 22 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end. A real need, handled.
Pick40
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
Donovan Ezeiruaku in slot 40 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick72
Rnd3
Dylan Sampson
They read the board right and Dylan Sampson was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. It fills a real need, too.
Pick86
Rnd3
Lathan Ransom
They paid up for Lathan Ransom at pick No. 86 when waiting would have done the job. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick93
Rnd3
Will Howard
They jumped the gun on Will Howard, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
Pick112
Rnd4
David Walker
A straight-up fair deal on David Walker at the 112th pick, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick128
Rnd4
Kyle Williams
Kyle Williams at the 128th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick135
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. in Round 4, Pick 33 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick148
Rnd5
Quincy Riley
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Quincy Riley. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick184
Rnd6
Tyler Cooper
They went early on Tyler Cooper in pick No. 184, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick205
Rnd6
Caleb Ransaw
They took Caleb Ransaw at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick224
Rnd7
Craig Woodson
Craig Woodson in slot 224 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick231
Rnd7
Ricky White III
Ricky White III at Round 7, Pick 15 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick248
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Value with a capital V on Isaac TeSlaa in No. 248, a genuine coup. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick254
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
Hayden Conner at pick 254 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
