Draft Grade — Colts
Overall

FutureA+
The Colts let Smith fall and pounced. Final grade: B. You could see the war room lean forward. Brashard Smith at Round 6, Pick 5 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
Riley has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. It is not that Mukuba is a bad player; it is that the Colts had louder needs to answer first.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick42
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
A safety of that caliber at the 42nd pick is the definition of value, full stop. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick52
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
They read the board right and Jihaad Campbell was the payoff at pick 52. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick58
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tyler Warren in Round 2, Pick 26. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick73
Rnd3
Darien Porter
Darien Porter at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick78
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Andrew Mukuba at safety with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots open.
Pick80
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Maxwell Hairston while clear needs at wide receiver, quarterback and other spots sat open.
Pick93
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson in pick No. 93 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick94
Rnd3
Jack Nelson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jack Nelson this early at slot 94. The roster fit checks out.
Pick108
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor slid further than he should have, and pick 108 is lovely value for the tight end. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick126
Rnd4
Hayden Conner
A real head-scratcher, Hayden Conner in Round 4, Pick 25 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick140
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
Taking Smael Mondon Jr. in the 140th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
Pick141
Rnd5
Shemar Turner
They talked themselves into Shemar Turner at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick144
Rnd5
Jake Majors
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jake Majors reach pick No. 144 and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick180
Rnd6
Brashard Smith
The board fumbled Brashard Smith all the way to No. 180, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick181
Rnd6
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa at slot 181 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick201
Rnd6
Quincy Riley
Quincy Riley at the 201st pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
