The phones sank the Dolphins this weekend: C. Nobody had Marvin Jones Jr. this high, and it is not close. The Dolphins reached 104 spots to get him at Round 7, Pick 18.
Stowers at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
They will answer for taking cornerback early while interior defensive lineman and linebacker went begging. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Colton Hood
In pick 30 they get an island corner. More want than need.
Pick43
Rnd2
D'Angelo Ponds
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, D'Angelo Ponds adds a cornerback and leaves interior defensive lineman and linebacker untouched.
Pick49
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
A slide stopped in the Round 2 slot, with Dillon Thieneman worth more than the price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick62
Rnd2
Zachariah Branch
Zachariah Branch in the 62nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
They robbed the room for Jake Slaughter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick82
Rnd3
Eli Stowers
Eli Stowers in slot 82 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick87
Rnd3
Deion Burks
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Deion Burks well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick97
Rnd3
Malachi Lawrence
Malachi Lawrence at pick No. 97 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick108
Rnd4
Mike Washington Jr.
They paid sticker price for Mike Washington Jr. in slot 108, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick146
Rnd5
Drew Allar
Drew Allar in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick149
Rnd5
Aamil Wagner
Aamil Wagner at No. 149 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick173
Rnd5
Taylen Green
Taylen Green in Round 5, Pick 35 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick227
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
A real head-scratcher, Trey Zuhn III in the 227th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick234
Rnd7
Marvin Jones Jr.
They reached a country mile for Marvin Jones Jr. at pick 234, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
