Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B
ValueD+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Steelers turned the phones into found money: B.

They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Drew Allar, 89 picks early at the Round 2 slot. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Steelers indulged a want in Brailsford while a need in linebacker, running back and other spots stayed open.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped linebacker, which is a strange place to end up.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Carnell Tate
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a weapon on the perimeter, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick53 Rnd2 Drew Allar
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Drew Allar. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick76 Rnd3 Monroe Freeling
Monroe Freeling at pick No. 76 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick99 Rnd3 Parker Brailsford
Of all the spots to shop, they chose offensive lineman. Parker Brailsford in the 99th pick leaves linebacker, running back and other spots for later.
Pick121 Rnd4 Jalon Daniels
Value said wait; Jalon Daniels in the 121st overall pick says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick136 Rnd4 Jakobe Thomas
Good price on Jakobe Thomas in No. 136, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick160 Rnd5 Jermaine Mathews Jr.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jermaine Mathews Jr.. It fills a real need, too.
Pick213 Rnd6 Barion Brown
Barion Brown at slot 213 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick214 Rnd6 Roderick Kearney
This one needs a full-page explanation: Roderick Kearney in the Round 6 slot, miles early. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick224 Rnd7 Jordan Hall
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jordan Hall this early at the 224th pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick237 Rnd7 Mitchell Melton
A real head-scratcher, Mitchell Melton in No. 237 is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
