Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Patriots, and a B- to prove it.

The Patriots clearly saw something nobody else did in Lee Hunter, taking him 26 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. No fireworks, but a solid B-.

That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In the 30th overall pick they get a green-dot type in the middle, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Pick62 Rnd2 Malachi Fields
A premium they did not need to pay, Malachi Fields a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94 Rnd3 Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley in slot 94 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick129 Rnd4 Max Iheanachor
Max Iheanachor at pick 129 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick130 Rnd4 LJ Martin
A swing that ignored the value entirely, LJ Martin well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick169 Rnd5 Lee Hunter
Lee Hunter at Round 5, Pick 30 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick191 Rnd6 Rayshaun Benny
Rayshaun Benny in slot 191 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick201 Rnd6 Trey Zuhn III
A reach on Trey Zuhn III in No. 201; the board had better options right there. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick208 Rnd6 Tristan Leigh
A wild overpay on Tristan Leigh in pick No. 208, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick211 Rnd6 Pat Coogan
They talked themselves into Pat Coogan at the 211th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick246 Rnd7 Hykeem Williams
Hykeem Williams at the 246th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
