Draft Grade — Raiders

FutureB
The Raiders bled value on every deal, hence the C. The board owed the Raiders one, and it paid up: John Mateer, the No. 74 name on the board, sitting there at pick No. 102 like a gift left on the doorstep. A weekend of give and take that grades a C.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Every board in the league had Zuhn III lower, and that gap is the story. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
The Hubbard pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
A tidy bit of business in the Round 1 slot, where Caleb Downs graded well above the range. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick36
Rnd2
Caleb Lomu
No edge and no loss on Caleb Lomu in slot 36; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick40
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles in slot 40 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick44
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
No drama and no debate, Emmanuel Pregnon went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick67
Rnd3
Lee Hunter
They jumped the gun on Lee Hunter, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick102
Rnd4
John Mateer
John Mateer at No. 102 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick103
Rnd4
Jack Endries
They paid sticker price for Jack Endries in the 103rd overall pick, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick109
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on D'Angelo Ponds. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick117
Rnd4
Bray Hubbard
A curious use of Round 4, Pick 17. Edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Bray Hubbard did not.
Pick135
Rnd4
Jacob Rodriguez
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Jacob Rodriguez in pick 135 leaves edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots for later.
Pick175
Rnd5
Gracen Halton
Gracen Halton in the 175th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick176
Rnd5
Jalon Daniels
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jalon Daniels in the Round 5 slot, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick179
Rnd5
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at pick 179 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
