FutureB-
The Cowboys kept it disciplined and banked a B. Priorities are a choice, and the Cowboys made a strange one, taking Jakobe Thomas at safety in the 112th overall pick with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots crying out for the pick instead. No fireworks, but a solid B.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. The Haulcy value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In No. 12 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick26
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
In the 26th pick they get a three-down second-level presence, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick62
Rnd2
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy at slot 62 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jakobe Thomas
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Jakobe Thomas in the 112th overall pick leaves wide receiver, quarterback and other spots for later.
Pick130
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
A premium they did not need to pay, Domani Jackson a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick150
Rnd5
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
The board had cheaper options than Jermaine Mathews Jr. at pick No. 150, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick168
Rnd5
Thaddeus Dixon
They went early on Thaddeus Dixon in No. 168, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick177
Rnd5
Raylen Wilson
A reach on Raylen Wilson in the Round 5 slot; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jerry Wilson
Jerry Wilson at Round 6, Pick 36 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick221
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
Riley Mahlman at pick No. 221 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick228
Rnd7
PJ Williams
They took PJ Williams at par in pick 228, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
