Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Cowboys for Murdock: B.

Somebody in No. 185 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Red Murdock, the No. 165 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.

For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Mahlman pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Quantity was the play, for better or worse.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Jeremiyah Love
In the Round 1 slot they get an every-down engine for the run game at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick20 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a three-down second-level presence, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick112 Rnd4 D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds in the 112th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick177 Rnd5 Bud Clark
By-the-book stuff, Bud Clark at pick 177 squarely in line with his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick185 Rnd6 Red Murdock
Circle this one: Red Murdock at pick No. 185 is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick196 Rnd6 Trey Zuhn III
No edge and no loss on Trey Zuhn III in No. 196; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick215 Rnd6 Riley Mahlman
A reach for Riley Mahlman in slot 215; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick221 Rnd7 Ahmaad Moses
Ahmaad Moses at the 221st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick223 Rnd7 Dijon Johnson
They paid sticker price for Dijon Johnson in the 223rd overall pick, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick225 Rnd7 PJ Williams
No drama and no debate, PJ Williams went about where he belonged in the Round 7 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
