FutureB
Quarterback settled, Mendoza in the fold, and a B+ for the Raiders. The Raiders spent the pick that matters most on Fernando Mendoza, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
Zvada has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They will answer for taking linebacker early while edge rusher went begging.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the 2nd overall pick they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick29
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In the 29th pick they get a green-dot type in the middle, reach and all. Need was not the driver here.
Pick36
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
They paid a round early for Emmanuel Pregnon in pick No. 36, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick61
Rnd2
Carter Smith
A wild overpay on Carter Smith in slot 61, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick72
Rnd3
Lee Hunter
They paid sticker price for Lee Hunter in No. 72, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick102
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
No drama and no debate, D'Angelo Ponds went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 2. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick115
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick120
Rnd4
Bray Hubbard
Bray Hubbard at pick 120 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick135
Rnd4
Jacob Rodriguez
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jacob Rodriguez at linebacker with edge rusher open.
Pick174
Rnd5
Taylen Green
Taylen Green at No. 174 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick176
Rnd5
Gracen Halton
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Gracen Halton. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick181
Rnd6
Jalon Daniels
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jalon Daniels. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick184
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at slot 184 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick200
Rnd6
De'Zhaun Stribling
De'Zhaun Stribling at the Round 6 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick206
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan at the 206th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick219
Rnd7
Dominic Zvada
Value said wait; Dominic Zvada in the 219th pick says they were not listening. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick254
Rnd7
Jack Velling
Value with a capital V on Jack Velling in the Round 7 slot, a genuine coup. The roster fit checks out.
Pick256
Rnd7
Trey Holly
The board had cheaper options than Trey Holly at pick 256, and it noticed. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
