Draft Grade — Raiders

The steal of the weekend belongs to the Raiders and Mateer: B+. The Raiders spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: John Mateer, the No. 73 name on the board, in the 136th pick. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
The Zvada pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Joey Porter Jr. deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Cashius Howell
In No. 21 they get a premier pass rusher. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33
Rnd2
Garrett Nussmeier
A premium they did not need to pay, Garrett Nussmeier a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick65
Rnd3
Olaivavega Ioane
Olaivavega Ioane in pick No. 65 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick78
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
Steal is underselling it; Jake Slaughter at Round 3, Pick 14 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick84
Rnd3
Carter Smith
Carter Smith in pick 84 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick101
Rnd4
Omar Cooper Jr.
Nice patience on Omar Cooper Jr., who had no business lasting to the Round 4 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick118
Rnd4
Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe at the 118th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick136
Rnd4
John Mateer
John Mateer in the 136th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick155
Rnd5
Bray Hubbard
Bray Hubbard slipping to Round 5, Pick 16 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick159
Rnd5
Isaac Smith
They liked Isaac Smith enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 159. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick175
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
Jacob Rodriguez at No. 175 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick182
Rnd6
Gracen Halton
Gracen Halton in the 182nd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick183
Rnd6
Lee Hunter
Lee Hunter at the 183rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick217
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick249
Rnd7
Dominic Zvada
They reached a country mile for Dominic Zvada at pick 249, and the board is aghast. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
