Nussmeier should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a A. Somebody in the 235th pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Garrett Nussmeier, the No. 50 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Arvell Reese and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In Round 1, Pick 16 they get the heartbeat of the defense, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Pick40
Rnd2
Carnell Tate
Carnell Tate in pick No. 40 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick51
Rnd2
Jermod McCoy
Jermod McCoy at the 51st overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick69
Rnd3
Mansoor Delane
You do not let a cornerback like Mansoor Delane reach slot 69 and blink. They did not. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick85
Rnd3
Kenyon Sadiq
Steal is underselling it; Kenyon Sadiq at No. 85 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick90
Rnd3
R Mason Thomas
They barely believed it either: R Mason Thomas still on the board at pick 90. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick96
Rnd3
Jordyn Tyson
They robbed the room for Jordyn Tyson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick105
Rnd4
Cashius Howell
Cashius Howell at the 105th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick122
Rnd4
Jake Slaughter
They will replay Jake Slaughter at the 122nd pick for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick125
Rnd4
Connor Lew
The board fumbled Connor Lew all the way to the Round 4 slot, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick130
Rnd4
Kayden McDonald
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at Round 4, Pick 30 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick131
Rnd4
Colton Hood
Somehow Colton Hood was still sitting there in pick 131, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick137
Rnd4
Sonny Styles
Taking Sonny Styles in slot 137 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick151
Rnd5
Romello Height
Romello Height at the 151st overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick156
Rnd5
Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman in pick No. 156 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick157
Rnd5
Jonah Coleman
Jonah Coleman in No. 157 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick169
Rnd5
Eli Stowers
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Eli Stowers in slot 169, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick189
Rnd6
Germie Bernard
Circle this one: Germie Bernard at pick No. 189 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick198
Rnd6
Deontae Lawson
Deontae Lawson at pick 198 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick200
Rnd6
Akheem Mesidor
The board fumbled Akheem Mesidor all the way to Round 6, Pick 21, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick207
Rnd6
Lee Hunter
Lee Hunter in the 207th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick209
Rnd6
Ja'Kobi Lane
Ja'Kobi Lane at the 209th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick221
Rnd7
Brandon Cisse
Brandon Cisse in the Round 7 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick235
Rnd7
Garrett Nussmeier
A quarterback of that caliber at No. 235 is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Pick246
Rnd7
Genesis Smith
Circle this one: Genesis Smith at Round 7, Pick 30 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
