Draft Grade — Bengals

FutureA+
The Bengals lost the trade table, and the D tells the story. The war room fell hard for Gee Scott Jr., and it showed at the 233rd pick: 238 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Bengals indulged a want in Ivey while a need in linebacker and quarterback stayed open.
They will regret leaving linebacker for another day if the season turns on it. Williams at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and linebacker is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Tyleik Williams
In pick 14 they get a wrecking ball inside, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick17
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In the 17th overall pick they get a lead back with juice, and a steal at that.
Pick33
Rnd2
Mykel Williams
Mykel Williams at the Round 2 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick39
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Malaki Starks in No. 39. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick41
Rnd2
Jared Ivey
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Jared Ivey in the 41st pick leaves linebacker and quarterback for later.
Pick45
Rnd2
Josh Conerly Jr.
Josh Conerly Jr. slid further than he should have, and Round 2, Pick 13 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick72
Rnd3
Deone Walker
They paid up for Deone Walker at pick 72 when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick81
Rnd3
Tory Horton
They talked themselves into Tory Horton at the Round 3 slot, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick119
Rnd4
Tyler Baron
A surprising call. With linebacker and quarterback still to address, they spent pick No. 119 on Tyler Baron, an edge rusher they were not short of.
Pick148
Rnd5
Jaylen Reed
Jaylen Reed at slot 148 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick153
Rnd5
Mello Dotson
Mello Dotson slipping to the 153rd overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick193
Rnd6
Torricelli Simpkins III
A real head-scratcher, Torricelli Simpkins III in Round 6, Pick 17 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick233
Rnd7
Gee Scott Jr.
Gee Scott Jr. in the 233rd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick240
Rnd7
Fadil Diggs
They paid sticker price for Fadil Diggs in No. 240, and that is fine. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
