Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The Steelers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

Nobody had Cade Klubnik this high, and it is not close. The Steelers reached 37 spots to get him at the 53rd pick. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

However the rest shakes out, Lew at that price is a win they earned. With interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on offensive lineman is the choice that costs them. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Jordyn Tyson
In slot 21 they get a No. 1 receiver, and a steal at that.
Pick53 Rnd2 Cade Klubnik
Cade Klubnik in No. 53 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick76 Rnd3 Monroe Freeling
They reached a country mile for Monroe Freeling at pick No. 76, and the board is aghast. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick85 Rnd3 Connor Lew
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Connor Lew at offensive lineman with interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots open.
Pick99 Rnd3 Daylen Everette
Daylen Everette at the 99th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick121 Rnd4 Chase Bisontis
A curious use of the 121st overall pick. Interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Chase Bisontis did not.
Pick135 Rnd4 Demond Claiborne
They let Demond Claiborne come to them and pounced at Round 4, Pick 35. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick159 Rnd5 Tanner Koziol
Tanner Koziol slid further than he should have, and No. 159 is lovely value for the tight end. It fills a real need, too.
Pick213 Rnd6 Luke Altmyer
Luke Altmyer is a better player than the 213th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick214 Rnd6 Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona at pick 214 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick224 Rnd7 Jalen Catalon
By-the-book stuff, Jalen Catalon at slot 224 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick237 Rnd7 Joey Aguilar
Joey Aguilar slipping to the 237th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
