FutureB-
The Patriots fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Peyton Bowen in pick No. 62. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
On value alone, Everette makes the weekend a net positive. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Keldric Faulk
Somehow Keldric Faulk was still sitting there in Round 1, Pick 30, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick47
Rnd2
Zachariah Branch
Zachariah Branch at slot 47 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick62
Rnd2
Peyton Bowen
They left a pile of value on the table to take Peyton Bowen this early at the Round 2 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94
Rnd3
Carter Smith
Nothing to complain about; Carter Smith went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jake Golday
Jake Golday in pick 113 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick125
Rnd4
Anthony Lucas
Anthony Lucas at No. 125 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick130
Rnd4
Zakee Wheatley
They barely believed it either: Zakee Wheatley still on the board at the Round 4 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick150
Rnd5
Nicholas Singleton
You do not let a running back like Nicholas Singleton reach slot 150 and blink. They did not. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick168
Rnd5
Princewill Umanmielen
Princewill Umanmielen at the 168th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick191
Rnd6
Barion Brown
This one needs a full-page explanation: Barion Brown in pick 191, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick202
Rnd6
Evan Stewart
They paid sticker price for Evan Stewart in No. 202, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick208
Rnd6
Daylen Everette
They will replay Daylen Everette at pick No. 208 for years; that is how good the value is. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick211
Rnd6
Trey Moore
By-the-book stuff, Trey Moore at the 211th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick246
Rnd7
DJ McKinney
DJ McKinney at Round 7, Pick 30 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
