Draft Grade — Chiefs

FutureA-
The Chiefs bled value on every deal, hence the D. Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Chiefs, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
They will answer for taking safety early while wide receiver, quarterback and other spots went begging. They are betting Price proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Jackson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In pick No. 13 they get a centerfielder for the defense, and a steal at that.
Pick40
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
No drama and no debate, Sonny Styles went about where he belonged in slot 40. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick42
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
A surprising call. With wide receiver, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent No. 42 on Dillon Thieneman, a safety they were not short of.
Pick61
Rnd2
Darrell Jackson Jr.
A tidy little value on Darrell Jackson Jr. in pick 61, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick66
Rnd3
Joe Royer
Joe Royer at the 66th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick74
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Zakee Wheatley adds a safety and leaves wide receiver, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Pick101
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
A reach on D'Angelo Ponds in the 101st pick; the board had better options right there. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick109
Rnd4
Jadarian Price
Jadarian Price at Round 4, Pick 9 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick132
Rnd4
Mike Washington Jr.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Mike Washington Jr. this early at pick No. 132. The roster fit checks out.
Pick140
Rnd5
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick146
Rnd5
Logan Jones
Logan Jones in No. 146 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
