Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
B
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB
FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B for the Chargers. The Chargers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending slot 214 on LaJohntay Wester a full 36 spots early. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. They banked enough surplus on Warren to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
Value with a capital V on Tyler Warren in slot 30, a genuine coup. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick55
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
By-the-book stuff, TreVeyon Henderson at pick No. 55 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick64
Rnd2
Jack Bech
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jack Bech. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick86
Rnd3
David Walker
David Walker in the 86th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick125
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore at the Round 4 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick158
Rnd5
Willie Lampkin
A real head-scratcher, Willie Lampkin in No. 158 is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick161
Rnd5
CJ West
CJ West at pick No. 161 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick181
Rnd6
Jalen McLeod
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jalen McLeod this early at Round 6, Pick 5. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick199
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
Oronde Gadsden II at the Round 6 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick209
Rnd6
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson
A slide stopped in slot 209, with Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson worth more than the price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick214
Rnd6
LaJohntay Wester
They talked themselves into LaJohntay Wester at the 214th pick, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick256
Rnd7
Marcus Yarns
Marcus Yarns in No. 256 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
