FutureD
Quarterback settled, Ward in the fold, and a B- for the Titans. The Titans bet big and early on Clay Webb, 126 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Everything downstream of Cam Ward depends on Cam Ward, and the building knows it. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Barron falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In slot 1 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Pick2
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
A straight-up fair deal on Abdul Carter at pick No. 2, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick3
Rnd1
Travis Hunter
In the 3rd overall pick they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick4
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In the 4th pick they get a cornerstone up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick5
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get a featured back. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick10
Rnd1
Mason Graham
In pick 10 they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick12
Rnd1
Grey Zabel
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick14
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
Matthew Golden in the 14th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick33
Rnd2
Jahdae Barron
The board fumbled Jahdae Barron all the way to slot 33, and they scooped it up. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick34
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Circle this one: Tyler Warren at pick 34 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick35
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
They read the board right and Malaki Starks was the payoff at the 35th overall pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick36
Rnd2
Andrew Mukuba
They reached into another round for Andrew Mukuba, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick38
Rnd2
Jared Ivey
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jared Ivey in pick No. 38, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick39
Rnd2
Isaiah Bond
They talked themselves into Isaiah Bond at Round 2, Pick 7, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Pick41
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell at pick 41 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. The roster fit checks out.
Pick44
Rnd2
Cobee Bryant
Value said wait; Cobee Bryant in the 44th pick says they were not listening. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick45
Rnd2
Kevin Winston Jr.
Kevin Winston Jr. at slot 45 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick65
Rnd3
CJ West
They left a pile of value on the table to take CJ West this early at Round 3, Pick 1. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Charles Grant
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Charles Grant. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick72
Rnd3
Clay Webb
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Clay Webb well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jake Majors
A wild overpay on Jake Majors in pick No. 76, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick99
Rnd3
Tez Johnson
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tez Johnson. A need, and now a little less of one.
