FutureB+
Nobody dealt better than the Patriots this weekend: B. The war room fell hard for Peny Boone, and it showed at pick No. 77: 326 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
The Ferguson steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
Matthew Golden at pick 23 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Shavon Revel Jr.
Value with a capital V on Shavon Revel Jr. in the 38th overall pick, a genuine coup. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick54
Rnd2
Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins at No. 54 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick77
Rnd3
Peny Boone
They reached a country mile for Peny Boone at the 77th pick, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick87
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo in pick No. 87 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick117
Rnd4
Howard Cross III
Howard Cross III in the Round 4 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick144
Rnd5
Cam Horsley
Cam Horsley in Round 5, Pick 6 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick171
Rnd5
Terrance Ferguson
You do not let a tight end like Terrance Ferguson reach No. 171 and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
Pick198
Rnd6
Marques Sigle
Marques Sigle at pick No. 198 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick211
Rnd6
Davin Vann
A wild overpay on Davin Vann in the 211th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick217
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
A premium they did not need to pay, Phil Mafah a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick220
Rnd7
Woody Marks
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Woody Marks in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick237
Rnd7
Gino Garcia
They left a pile of value on the table to take Gino Garcia this early at the 237th overall pick. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick238
Rnd7
Khris Bogle
They talked themselves into Khris Bogle at slot 238, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
