FutureA
Best value of the weekend goes to the Bengals for Milum: D. The rest of the league will want that one back. Wyatt Milum tumbling to the Bengals in the Round 7 slot is a gift they did not have to think twice about. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
Reaching for Horton left real value on the table behind him. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
The Stewart pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end, quarterback and other spots still on the board. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Travis Hunter
In No. 5 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick8
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In the 8th overall pick they get a premier pass rusher. More want than need.
Pick14
Rnd1
Shemar Stewart
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Shemar Stewart adds an edge rusher and leaves tight end, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Pick39
Rnd2
Josh Conerly Jr.
Josh Conerly Jr. in pick No. 39 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick41
Rnd2
Demetrius Knight Jr.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Demetrius Knight Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick59
Rnd2
Tory Horton
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tory Horton. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick72
Rnd3
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori in pick 72 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick103
Rnd4
Maxwell Hairston
The board fumbled Maxwell Hairston all the way to slot 103, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick153
Rnd5
T.J. Sanders
Taking T.J. Sanders in slot 153 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick193
Rnd6
Dylan Fairchild
Steal is underselling it; Dylan Fairchild at the Round 6 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
Pick233
Rnd7
Wyatt Milum
A offensive lineman of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 17 is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick240
Rnd7
Anthony Belton
Circle this one: Anthony Belton at No. 240 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
