FutureB-
The Raiders bet the future on Mendoza. The board says D-. The Raiders did not so much draft Trey Zuhn III as overpay for him, 30 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Whatever Fernando Mendoza becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
However the rest shakes out, Styles at that price is a win they earned.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the 1st overall pick they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value.
Pick29
Rnd1
LT Overton
In slot 29 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36
Rnd2
Zion Young
They paid up for Zion Young at pick No. 36 when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick61
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles at the Round 2 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick67
Rnd3
Lee Hunter
No drama and no debate, Lee Hunter went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 3. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick93
Rnd3
Jake Golday
Value with a capital V on Jake Golday in the 93rd pick, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick106
Rnd4
Xavier Scott
No edge and no loss on Xavier Scott in Round 4, Pick 6; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick117
Rnd4
Blake Miller
They took Blake Miller at par in slot 117, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick135
Rnd4
Ted Hurst
A real head-scratcher, Ted Hurst in the 135th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick166
Rnd5
Bryce Boettcher
Bryce Boettcher at the 166th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick168
Rnd5
Pat Coogan
A reach on Pat Coogan in pick No. 168; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick176
Rnd5
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at pick 176 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
