Best value of the weekend goes to the Chiefs for Smith-Wade: B. When a board-topper like Chau Smith-Wade slides to Round 7, Pick 32, you do not overthink it, and the Chiefs did not.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Xavier Worthy
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Worthy. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick63
Rnd2
Jermaine Burton
They did well to land Jermaine Burton in Round 2, Pick 31, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick131
Rnd4
Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu slipping to the Round 4 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick149
Rnd5
Antwane Wells Jr.
Somehow Antwane Wells Jr. was still sitting there in the 149th pick, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
Jack Nelson at No. 163 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick171
Rnd5
Kamal Hadden
They paid sticker price for Kamal Hadden in slot 171, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick175
Rnd5
Steve Linton
Steve Linton in the 175th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick209
Rnd6
Tony Grimes
They took Tony Grimes at par in pick 209, which is nothing to complain about. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick252
Rnd7
Chau Smith-Wade
The board fumbled Chau Smith-Wade all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
