FutureA-
Lew should have been long gone. The Raiders pounced, and earned a D+. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Raiders shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The process wobbled, and the D+ is where it lands.
The Raiders indulged a want in Hill Jr. while a need in running back and tight end stayed open. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Lew steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the Round 1 slot they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. Need was not the driver here.
Pick28
Rnd1
Avieon Terrell
In the 28th overall pick they get an island corner, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick30
Rnd1
Kayden McDonald
In pick 30 they get a wrecking ball inside at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick38
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
Caleb Banks slipping to pick No. 38 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick42
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Anthony Hill Jr. while clear needs at running back and tight end sat open.
Pick61
Rnd2
Germie Bernard
They read the board right and Germie Bernard was the payoff at No. 61. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick67
Rnd3
Antonio Williams
They let Antonio Williams come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 3. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick72
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy is a better player than pick 72 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick93
Rnd3
Connor Lew
They robbed the room for Connor Lew here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick110
Rnd4
Caden Curry
Good price on Caden Curry in No. 110, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick112
Rnd4
Deion Burks
Deion Burks at the 112th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick117
Rnd4
Monroe Freeling
Monroe Freeling at the 117th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick132
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
Trinidad Chambliss slid further than he should have, and the Round 4 slot is lovely value for the quarterback. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick135
Rnd4
Ar'maj Reed-Adams
Ar'maj Reed-Adams at slot 135 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick151
Rnd5
Kage Casey
Value with a capital V on Kage Casey in the 151st overall pick, a genuine coup. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick169
Rnd5
Brenen Thompson
Brenen Thompson at pick No. 169 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick176
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
They did well to land Xavier Nwankpa in the Round 5 slot, just ahead of his grade. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick181
Rnd6
Taylen Green
Nice patience on Taylen Green, who had no business lasting to the 181st pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick184
Rnd6
Eric McAlister
Eric McAlister in slot 184 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick219
Rnd7
Peyton Bowen
No edge and no loss on Peyton Bowen in No. 219; it is a wash and a sensible one. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
